The Pacific Northwest Oil Heat Council (PNOC), or formally known as the Oil Heat Institute, was founded in 1942 for the sole purpose to serve the oil heat community, which inclu-ded both consumers and oil heat businesses.

The Pacific Northwest Oil Heat Council still exists in the Seattle based areas to:
• Educate consumers on the benefits of oil heat
• Provide legislative protection to oil heat dealers in
Washington State
• Offer training programs to oil heat service technicians

Today, the Pacific Northwest Oil Heat Council has joined forces with the Washington Oil Marketers Association to provide a more cohesive and consistent voice in the State Legislature.

Our Association works every day with Legislators and State Agencies to help keep regulations in check while not raising prices to consumers.

The Association, bound by the Sherman Anti-Trust Act, is prohibited from discussing price. The antitrust laws are a comprehensive charter of economic controls aimed at promoting free competition. Therefore, at no time, will a spokesman or director of PNOC be allowed to quote prices. The Association may discuss trends, but only in general economic terms.

There are currently 31 members of the Washington Oil Marketers Association who distribute heating oil in the State of Washington. Check out our “Locate A Dealer” section for the Heating Oil Dealer near you!

Oilheat has just gotten smarter - it's eating its vegetables!

Bioheat — heating oil blended with biodegradable, organic materials such as soybean oil — is one of the “hottest” things happening in home comfort. Renewable and non-toxic, Bioheat is not only kind to Mother Earth;
it’s kind to heating systems, too.

Bioheat Characteristics:
• Domestically produced, soy-based Bioheat can literally be
grown at home — helping to support our nation’s farmer
and reducing our dependence on foreign oil.
• It is extremely clean burning.
• It has the highest Btu content of any alternative fuel.

Bioheat Benefits for Homeowners:
• Bioheat produces the same satisfying heat as “regular oil.”
• It costs just about the same as “regular oil.”
• It lubricates heating system.
• You don’t have to make any modifications to your burner
or tank.
• You don’t have to buy any new equipment.
• You don’t have to change your budget plan, payment plan,
service contract or warranties.

Wondering what makes up Bioheat?
These every-day products of nature can be used to produce the alternative environment-friendly fuel:
• Avocado
• Brazil Nut
• Calendula
• Cashew
• Castor Bean
• Coconut
• Coffee
• Corn
• Cotton
• Euphorbia
• Hazelnut
• Hemp
• Jojoba
• Linseed
• Lupine
• Macadamia Nut
• Oat
• Oil Palm
• Olive Tree
• Palm
• Peanut
• Pecan
• Pumpkin Seed
• Rapeseed
• Rice
• Rubber Seed
• Safflower
• Sesame
• Soybean
• Sunflower
• Tung Oil Tree

Testing conducted by the National Oilheat Research Alliance (NORA) found that a Bioheat blend of 80% low-sulfur heating oil and 20% biodiesel (B20) reduced sulfur oxide emissions by as much as 80% or more. Nitrogen oxide emissions were lowered by about 20%. In addition, carbon dioxide emissions can be lowered by 20%.

If everyone using heating oil used a B5 blend (5% biodiesel/95% heating oil), 400 million gallons of regular heating oil could be conserved. This would be a big step towards conserving oil, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Today's Oil Heat is Clean
The number one myth about home heating oil is that it is dirty. Wrong! Home heating oil is a clear, rosy-red liquid that is non-toxic, biodegradable and has no carcinogens. Oil heat burns at a level of overall cleanliness approaching 99.9% and unlike gas carries no risk of explosion. In fact, oil heat emissions have such low output that they aren't even regulated by the Federal Clean Air Act.

Because of its high efficiency and cleanliness, oil heat systems have an amazingly small impact on the environment.
In fact, the Environmental Protection Agency says that modern oil burners are one of the cleanest combustion sources available. They release near zero levels of smoke and combustion discharge and produce less greenhouse gas than natural gas systems. Home heating oil is also non-toxic and biodegradable. It all means that oil heat remains a responsible environmental choice for heating your home despite the scare tactics you may have heard by unscrupulous contractors looking to make a quick buck by frightening people into expensive unnecessary conversions.
Heating oil does have a distinctive petroleum odor, but the fumes are not dangerous and usually dissipate quickly. Usually the only time a heating oil odor is detected is immediately after a delivery if a few drops of heating oil are left on the fill pipe. Rarely is there an odor produced when the furnace is running. Heating oil burns cleanly so if there is a smell, or more likely soot appearing at the furnace or around the heat registers, it's due to poorly maintained equipment. A tune-up by a qualified home oil heat technician will take care of the problem, and most likely increase the efficiency of the furnace. Oil furnaces pose little or no threat of carbon monoxide poisoning because equipment in bad enough condition to produce CO will not operate.

Today's Oil Heat is Efficient
Everyone wants to get the best bang for their buck. Oil heat gives you just that because it uses less fuel to produce more heat. That's right!  A gallon of home heating oil produces more heat compared to comparable amounts of other fuel sources. That means, in addition to paying a very competitive price on the front end, you also use less fuel to produce more heat. It takes 1.4 therms of natural gas, 1.52 gallons of propane, and 40.6 kwh of electricity to equal the heat content of 1 gallon of heating oil. Add an oil-fired hot water heater to your system and that efficiency is even more impressive. You’ll enjoy unlimited supplies of hot water at a fraction of the cost of a gas or electric water heater.

Q: My neighbors just had their Oilheat system upgraded. They claim the upgrade will save money. My system's about twenty years old and it's still working pretty well. Why should I consider an upgrade?

A: Studies show older Oilheat equipment is not as effective as more-efficient modern units. New oil equipment produces the highest average efficiency at 85%. Make an appointment to have your system evaluated. After thoroughly inspecting the equipment, the service technician may suggest an upgrade. A new system will reduce maintenance and repair costs, lower your heating bills, and provide greater peace-of-mind. A new, modern, compact, high efficiency Oilheat system will often pay for itself over a short period of time.

Q: Why should I schedule regular maintenance on my Oilheat equipment?

A: According to the Environmental Protection Agency, heating equipment that is maintained annually uses 13% less fuel than units that are not. Approximately 55% of American homeowners have their heating equipment serviced. Those that don't may experience an increase of 10-15% in fuel bills. Maintenance extends the life of your heating equipment by as much as 20-30% which can translate into 5 to 10 years of additional usage for a furnace or boiler. Approximately 75% of all emergency repairs can be avoided with regular maintenance.

Did You Know?
A few years ago, Lady Liberty needed an upgrade of her heating system. The National Parks Service, the federal agency that manages the monument, chose to outfit her with a brand new oil heating system. Because the Statue has such a massive interior space and complex construction, superior efficiency made oil heat the ideal option.
Another benefit was that oil heat would fight the harbor's wind chills. Oil heat's reliability would ensure that the statue's staff, visitors, equipment, structure and artifacts would be protected. The new, state-of-the-art oil heat system was installed in the statue in 1998. Yes, Lady Liberty certainly does warm hearts... with a little help from Oil Heat!

Many other notable monuments also use oil heat to keep visitors warm and comfortable. The National Baseball Hall of Fame, The National Basketball Hall of Fame, and the Mount Rushmore National Monument are three of these great American landmarks. Throughout the country, the greatest historic sights look to trusted, dependable Oil Heat.

Winter, spring, summer, fall ...
We've got a conservation tip for all!

When it comes to energy savings, conservation is most important. There are many ways that you can conserve energy, that are fast and easy to implement. Here are some conservation tips -- no matter the season or the type of weather, we have you covered.

Conservation Tips for Cold Weather
• Sunshine! Windows on the south side of the house get the
most sunlight. Eastern windows get sunlight in the mor-
ning. West facing windows receive sunlight in the after-
noon. Open shades and drapes during the daytime to let
the sun’s warmth enter your home, and close when the
sun goes down.
• Close your kitchen vent, fireplace damper and closet doors
when not in use.
• Remove air conditioning window units, or cover them well.
• Keep radiators free of dust for top efficiency.
• According to the U.S. Department of Energy, homeowners
can save as much as 10% a year on their heating and
cooling bills by simply turning the thermostat back by 10
to 15 degrees.
• Wrap your pipes, to guard against heat loss and prevent
them from freezing.
• Avoid using space heaters. They're expensive to operate,
and can be dangerous, too.
• Check your threshold for any gaps between it and the
door. Use a bottom seal that can be attached to the bot-
tom of the door -- it should brush up against the floor to
seal up the threshold. It virtually stops drafts.
• Get a heating system tune-up — it’ll ensure you get
maximum performance from every drop of heating oil
burned.
• Make sure you have good insulation on exterior walls,
ceilings with cold spaces above, and floors with cold
spaces below.
• Change the windows. Consider new low-emissivity glass,
which will decrease radiant heat loss without lowering
visibility.
• Upgrade your oil burner — a modern burner can cut costs
by 15%.

Conservation Tips for Warm Weather
• Keep drapes, blinds and shades closed during the day to
block out the sun.
• Move furniture away from air conditioning vents.
• Plant shade trees due west of west windows. It could
reduce your air conditioning bills by up to 25%!
• Cook on the grill to keep cooking heat outside the home.
• When cooking inside, use a microwave instead of a
conventional oven. It uses less than half the power and
cooks food in about one-fourth the time.
• Install reflective window coatings to reflect heat away from
your home.
• Use ceiling fans to cool your home — they’re much
cheaper to operate than air conditioners, and moving air
feels cooler, so you can keep your thermostat setting
higher.
• Open windows on cool summer days and nights. A good
rule of thumb is not to open windows when the outside
temperature is warmer than the inside of your house.
• Change or clean your air conditioning filter monthly during
cooling season to improve efficiency and the life of your
air conditioner.
• Whenever possible, hang your laundry outdoors to dry.
• Install patio covers, awnings, and solar window screens to
shade your home from the sun.
• Keep the coils of your central or window air conditioner
free of dust and dirt.

Year-Round Conservation Tips
• Use compact fluorescent lights. They last up to 10 - 13
times longer than standard bulbs and use 75% less energy.
• Install dimmer switches. In addition to enhancing the
mood, they'll extend the life of your bulbs and help you
save up to 60% on your lighting costs.
• Lower the temperature of your water heater from 140° to
120°. You'll save 3% -5% in water heating costs for each
10° reduction. Or consider a timer to turn your water heater
off when not in use.
• Don't keep your refrigerator or freezer too cold.
Recommended temperatures are 37° to 40°F for the
refrigerator and 5°F for the freezer.
• Don't leave the fridge door open! Every time you do, up to
30% of the air inside can escape. The same can be said for
your oven.
• Use a covered kettle or pan to boil water; it's faster and it
uses less energy.
• Air-dry dishes. Also, avoid using the heat-dry, rinse-hold
and pre-rinse features.
• Choose a high-efficiency clothes washer and dryer. High-
efficiency washers use half the water of standard models.
High-efficiency dryers can save up to 30% in energy over
standard models.
• Defrost food before cooking — you could save 30% to 50%
on cooking costs. And pre-heat your oven only for baking.
• Install water-conserving fixtures, such as showerheads,
faucets and toilets.
• Fix leaky faucets, especially hot water faucets. One drop
per second can add up to 165 gallons per month — more
than a person uses in two weeks.
• Install a programmable thermostat. When properly used, it
could save as much as $100 or more off your annual
heating bills.
